Orpheus in Manhattan: William Schuman and the Shaping of America's Musical Life by Steve Swayne
Oxford University Press, January 2011
The musical landscape of New York City and the United States of America would look quite different had it not been for William Schuman. Orpheus in Manhattan, a fully objective and comprehensive biography of William Schuman, portrays a man who had a profound influence upon the artistic and political institutions of his day and beyond. Steve Swayne draws heavily upon Schuman's letters, writings, and manuscripts as well as unprecedented access to archival recordings and previously unknown correspondence.

SCHUMAN BIOGRAPHY PUBLISHED!
American Muse: The Life and Times of William Schuman by Juilliard President, Joseph W. Polisi, Amadeus Press, 2008, is a compelling new biography of William Schuman, the composer, teacher and arts administrator who was a long-time president of the Juilliard School and the first significant president of Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts. Polisi has written the definitive story of Schuman's fascinating life – an in-depth chronicle of the many hats Schuman wore, his bold and lasting legacy, and his controversial innovations – including the story of the turbulent struggle among political, financial and artistic forces in New York City during the mid-twentieth century – a struggle which greatly impacted the funding and building of Lincoln Center where the Juilliard School eventually became the educational wing at Schuman's urging. With Schuman's own oral histories and interviews with family members among resources, Polisi's book (which includes an extensive appendix of descriptive analyses with musical examples of ten of Schuman's works) is essential reading for anyone interested in the singular life of William Schuman and the era he so greatly influenced.
